ITF Eireann Shine at the ITF Midlands Open Championships 2009

East coast Taekwon-do along with Kinsale Taekwon-do led the charge of ITF Eireann at the recent Midlands ITF Open. The group consisted of 50 competitors along with friends and families and Instructors Chris McCabe, Michael Whelan, James Whelan, Liam Corkery and Jeni Field

The event kicked off with all black belts competing first, the first medal of the day came to Leighanne McCarthy who took bronze in the junior under 17 black belt patterns; this was followed swiftly by Chris McCabe who also won bronze in the senior black Belt patterns. The Patterns were followed by the Black Sparring which saw Chris McCabe take gold in the minus 70kgs section beating a world champion on route. James Whelan competing in the plus 80kgs hyper weight took third place.

In the kids colour belt Eric Murphy and Darren McGee were double medal winners when they took silver in their patterns and shortly after gold in their sparring, in the same section Hugh Ward took a bronze in the sparring

As the day moved on more and more medals kept coming, Tiernan Byrne winning gold in the junior boys minus 70 kg’s black sparring .The boys under 12 colour belt sparring final was fought out by Daniel McCarthy and James Lavelle with Daniel taking Gold
In the senior men’s colour belt section Tim Daly took gold in the patterns Dave Bowman took silver in the veteran colour belt patterns, and shortly after added a gold to his tally when he won the colour belt hyper weight sparring section, in the senior ladies black belt, Laura Cremen pulled off all the breaks to take gold in destruction.

The ITF Eireann Junior Black Belt Ladies team which comprised of Leighanne McCarthy and Rachael McCarthy of Kinsale and Shireen Mansori and Sarah Browne East coast took second place in the Team patterns with a superb display of Ge Baek
Mitra Mansori, Abbey Soon and Shannon Kelly completed in the junior belt pattern and were unlucky not to be place in the top three.

In all a total of 44 medals were won by 50 competitors at the Event which shows the quality of ITF Eireann,
